Choosing Your Wedding Colors

May 1, 2013

The colors you choose for your wedding day set the style and tone for your entire event. You can use color in your bridesmaids' dresses, decorations, cake, favors, flowers, accessories, table linens and even the invitations! Choose colors you love, but also consider the following:

The Setting

Your Setting should be your first consideration. Look at the colors used in your venue’s decor.  If you already have your heart set on a certain color, you may need to select a more neutrally decorated site.

Favorite Shade

You have absolutely loved the color pink since you were a little girl . . .  so go with what you love! You can tastefully incorporate any color into your wedding decorations by selecting a hue and combining it with the right accents.

Favorite Flowers

If roses or orchids are your favorite bloom, incorporate them into your wedding décor. Let the flower color inspire – either making it the dominant shade or using it as an accent – and it will all come together.

Season

Decorating can be simple when you use Mother Nature as your guide. Let the natural colors of the season inspire your chosen wedding colors Make sure that the wedding colors you choose complement the blooms and foliage that are naturally available during that time of year. Check with your floral designer for advice on what blooms are readily available in the season of your wedding.  If you are considering a beach wedding, go for bright and vibrant colors that enhance the natural beauty of the sand and sea.

Bridesmaids’ Dresses

If you want your "girls" dressed head to toe in your signature color, try to make sure it’s an attractive and flattering shade for all of them them to wear. If teal plays the lead role in your wedding color story, then consider dressing your "girls" in your accent color.

Research

Don’t get stuck on a color scheme because you saw it once in a magazine and liked it. Be sure to consider all of your wedding décor and how each detail will be affected by your chosen color scheme. Research the popular color choices for the current year,  look through photographs from other weddings you love, browse your favorite blogs, and start a scrapbook. The Internet and magazines are a tremendous source of ideas for colors and themes.
