Have a Blended Family Wedding

March 21, 2013

Many couples today have children from a previous marriage or relationship and they may also have one or more children resulting from their relationship together. For many couples it is important to them to include their children in some way in the wedding celebration so that they feel a part of this new family that they are now a part of. A Blended Family Ceremony is a unique opportunity to show their love and devotion to their children.

Including children in the wedding ceremony is an excellent way to reinforce these new relationships. It can be done in many different ways, by adding vows from the couple that affirm their love and commitment to support one another in guiding the children, as well as assurances from the couple directly to the children. The children may also be asked to affirm that they understand, respect and accept the new union.

Including the children in family wedding vows is a wonderful way to unite the two families. However, it is not the only way to include children in the wedding ceremony. Some other wedding ceremony ideas may include:

  • Give the children a special gift that represents the new family. This can be done during the ceremony with a few words spoken, or just before or after the ceremony. The special gift may include family rings, a medallion with the wedding date engraved on it, a chain or necklace or bracelet.

  • Include the children in a Unity Sand Ceremony, where each child chooses his or her own color of sand and create a beautiful keepsake for display in your new home together.

Children can also join the wedding ceremony as part of the bridal party, serving as the Flower Girl and Ring Bearer. Older children may participate as Junior Bridesmaids and Groomsmen. Some brides and grooms may ask their children to serve as their maid of honor or best man. Childen may also choose to do special reading.

Creating a blended family wedding ceremony is a touching and personal way to share the joining of not just two people, but of an entire family. When Done carefully and with respect for the children involved, this type of wedding ceremony can be a very moving and memorable experience for all.
