Including Your Pet on your Wedding Day

May 24, 2013

Pets play a large role in many peoples’ lives, and for some couples it makes perfect sense to consider including them in their wedding day activities. They can provide another aspect to the day, your photographs, creating memories and moments that last.

Once you have decided to include your pet in the wedding day festivities you will need to determine what role your pet will play. The possibilities are endless. Some of the most common roles include having your dog serve as a ring bearer or flower girl. It’s also a good idea to make sure you use a fake ring for obvious reasons. You should also check with the ceremony venue to make sure pets are acceptable. If having your pet participate is not feasible because of venue restrictions or the pet not cooperate, another option would be to have your photographer take pictures with your pet on your wedding day. Animals create excellent photographic opportunities. Whether it is during the actual ceremony, the reception or when you’re getting ready, pets will add a degree of personality to your wedding and keep it fun!

In most cases, the pet attending your wedding will be a dog. So how do you know if your pet is ready for his close-up? It is important that you know how your pet will react in different situations. If you’re considering including him in the ceremony, how will he responds to large groups of people. Is he easily distracted?

You can do all the planning and rehearsing with your pet, but in the end you may have to hold your breath and cross your fingers. Just like a small child, you just never know how they are going to react.

HELPFUL SUGGESTIONS:

  • A pet’s favorite toy or bedding can be helpful in giving them a sense of comfort and security.

  • It’s always a good idea to put someone other than the couple in charge of the dog. Ideally, it should be someone that the pet feels comfortable with.

  • With all the activity taking place, it’s important to create as comfortable an environment for your pet as possible. This means putting him on a leash if that’s what he’s accustomed to. Give them a small role in the wedding, just enough to have those cute, adorable photographs.

Finally, with thoughtful consideration and a little planning, you can include your pet and have your wedding photographer  capturie the guest’s reaction to this most unique day.
