Renewing Your Wedding Vows

April 13, 2013

As a married couple, renewing your wedding vows can be a meaningful and touching way to pause and reflect on where you have been and where you are going in your marrige. It is also a beautiful example to your children to witness their parents joining hands and hearts as they affirm the strength and beauty of their enduring love for one another – is there a greater life lesson?

Wedding Vow Renewal Ceremonies can be as creative and personal as you want them to be. You can walk down the aisle with your children playing a classical song or a song that has special meaning to you as a couple. You can purchase new wedding bands for the occasion and have them specially engraved. Your Renewal ceremony should be less formal than a wedding–more casual and fun-filled. This ceremony is all about you as a couple and a family.

Significant anniversaries are an especially good time for renewing your commitment and love. I have conducted vow renewals for couples married as little as 5 years and as much as 50 years. Some couples choose to renew their vows after a particularly difficult time in their marriage, such as overcoming a serious illness or a period of separation. They want to make it new again! Others simply want to reaffirm the tremendous love that has matured and deepened with the passing of years.

Unlike weddings, no legal paperwork is needed for a vow renewal. The ceremony can be conducted on the beach at sunset, a chapel, banquet facility, on a yacht, out of doors or in the privacy of a couple’s home - with a room full of guests or in an intimate setting with just the couple.

Here are a few Vow Renewal tips to make the occasion special:

  • Involve the children or other family members with a Unity Candle or Sand Ceremony
  • Recreate your original wedding bouquet
  • Use your wedding photo to make personalized invitations.
  • Display your wedding photograph.
